USW Mourns Passing of Mexican Labor Leader

(Pittsburgh) – The United Steelworkers (USW) issued the following statement after the passing of Juan Linares Montufar, a leader of the National Union of Mine, Metal, Steel and Related Workers of the Mexican Republic (“Los Mineros”) in Mexico:

“The United Steelworkers in Canada and the United States mourn the loss of Los Mineros leader Juan Linares Montufar, who was imprisoned for more than two years by the right-wing government of President Felipe Calderon as part of a campaign to crush the independent union. A USW delegation visited Linares in prison, and after an international protest campaign, charges were dropped and he was released in February 2011.

“Our union extends our deepest condolences to the family of Brother Linares; to Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, President and General Secretary of Los Mineros; and to all the members of the union on this sad occasion.

“As we fight together for justice, we will continue to be inspired by Juan’s example.”

“El sindicato United Steelworkers, en Canadá y los Estados Unidos, lamenta la pérdida de Juan Linares Montufar, un líder del Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores Mineros, Metalúrgicos, Siderúrgicos y Similares de la República Mexicana «Los Mineros» en México, quien fue encarcelado durante más de dos años por el gobierno de derecha del presidente Felipe Calderón como parte de una campaña para aplastar a este sindicato independiente. Una delegación de los Steelworkers visitó a Linares en prisión y, tras una campaña internacional de protesta, se retiraron los cargos en su contra y fue puesto en libertad en febrero de 2011.

“Los Steelworkers expresamos nuestras más profundas condolencias a la familia del compañero Linares; a Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, presidente y secretario general de Los Mineros; y a todos los afiliados del sindicato en esta triste ocasión.

“Mientras luchamos juntos por la justicia, seguiremos inspirándonos en el ejemplo de Juan.”

The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply, and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech, and service occupations.
