USW Applauds Commitment to Reauthorize Trade Adjustment Assistance

PITTSBURGH — The United Steelworkers (USW) today welcomed a commitment from Rep. Linda Sánchez and congressional leaders to reauthorize the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program and advance the TAA Modernization Act, renewing critical support for workers whose jobs and communities have been disrupted by trade. 

The TAA program, which expired in 2022, provides a range of services to workers displaced by trade, including skills training, job search and relocation assistance, and extended income support. For decades, the program served as a vital lifeline, helping workers rebuild their careers and sustain their families while strengthening local economies. 

USW International President Roxanne Brown called on lawmakers to move quickly to restore and modernize the program. 

“Trade Adjustment Assistance represents a promise to America’s workers that they will not be left behind when trade policies cost them their jobs,” Brown said. “We urge Congress to reauthorize and strengthen TAA without delay. Our members have courageously shared their stories and testified about the real-world consequences of unfair trade, and we thank them for standing up for their co-workers and communities.” 

The TAA Modernization Act would expand access to benefits, improve training opportunities and streamline support to ensure workers can transition into good-paying union jobs. 

The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech and service occupations.
