PITTSBURGH — The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that work will continue at U.S. Steel and Cleveland Cliffs Steel under 30-day extensions of the current contracts as the union and both companies proceed with negotiations on successor collective bargaining agreements.

The agreements covering tens of thousands of USW represented workers at the two steelmakers are set to expire Sept. 1, 2026, though negotiations over issues such as wages, benefits, job security, health and safety, capital investments and other issues affecting union members and their families will continue.

“The USW remains committed to reaching strong agreements that recognize the contributions of union members and protect the future of good, family-supporting steel jobs,” said USW International President Roxanne Brown. “While negotiations continue, workers will remain on the job, producing high-quality products under the terms and conditions of the current agreements.”

The USW said negotiations will continue in the coming days and that the union will provide updates to members as discussions progress.

The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of members in tech, higher education, public sector and service occupations.
