Former USW member and current state representative running for Congress in Minnesota

Flight attendant and former USW member, Kaela Berg, is taking her unyielding advocacy for working families to the next level with her recent decision to run for United States Congress in Minnesota.

“For years, Kaela has led by example, demonstrating the undeniable impact working people can have at the bargaining table, in our state legislatures, and in Washington D.C.,” said USW District 11 Director, Cathy Drummond.  “If there’s one thing we should all learn from her run for Congress, it’s that we should never underestimate the power of a union.”

Berg has long been a union activist, and she became a USW member when the USW merged with the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers Union (PACE) in 2005. 

During her years as a USW member, Kaela leaned heavily into union activism, particularly our non-partisan legislative program, Rapid Response. 

She also served as director of the Minnesota Fair Trade Coalition, a USW-allied group, and has been elected multiple times to the Minnesota State Assembly where she’s repeatedly led on working peoples’ and union issues. 

In fact, she wrote the state’s law opposing union-busting captive audience meetings that was in the news recently for surviving a legal challenge.  We highlighted Berg’s anti-captive audience legislation along with a host of other pro-worker bills in our May 2023 Election Connection Newsletter.   

Kaela and her coworkers became part of the Association of Flight Attendants (represented by the Communications Workers of America), but she always kept her USW ties.
