Building Power in the U.S. Senate

Our longtime friend and advocate for USW jobs, Roy Cooper, recently secured his party’s nomination in the competitive election for United States Senate in North Carolina. 

This closely-watched election is a must-win if we want to regain pro-worker control of the U.S. Senate.

In 2021, Governor Cooper joined the USW’s We Supply America bus tour, highlighting the investments of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which included $65 million for expanding Internet access. These investments helped bolster USW jobs nationwide, including hundreds of workers represented by USW Local 1025 who work at a Corning plant in Wilmington, North Carolina. 

And, in 2023, Cooper spoke out against Pactiv Evergreen when they abruptly closed their doors on nearly a thousand of our members at USW Local 507.

“The paper mill turned its back on generations of workers that helped make their profits, but the union, even after the closing was announced, was fighting for more time, pay, and better working conditions,” Cooper said. “And as the plant wound down, they were helping workers find help for families and helping them transition to jobs. That’s what union families do for each other, and I’m grateful for that.”
